PLACES TO VISIT

Nearby picturesque villages of Tintagel and Boscastle are worth visiting, with attractions such as Tintagel Castle and the Museum of Witchcraft , and a little further afield is the wonderful Hartland Abbey & Gardens. There is a lovely woodland walk to Blackpool Mill, the location of 'Barton Cottage' in the BBC's production of Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility'. The cottage overlooks a rugged Atlantic cove 1 mile from the Abbey and the walk is a carpet of wildflowers in spring, with primroses, violets, wood anemones or a mass of bluebells, at their best in April.

Close to Hartland are the gold medal winning Docton Mill Gardens.

Also in Devon is RHS Rosemoor at Great Torrington which is well worth a visit, as is the village of Clovelly.

Back in Cornwall, there are some glorious, safe, stretches of sandy beach where children can play and explore, and excellent areas for surfing and bodyboarding North Cornwall Beaches . Visit Pencarrow House and Gardens and Japanese Bonsai Gardens at St Mawgan, the Lost Gardens of Heligan or the famous Eden Project. As well the usual summer attractions, each winter the Eden project has an ice skating rink with a winter forest theme, Christmas Shopping, Father Christmas, Cornish choirs singing carols and of course delicious festive food and drink. There are also special late evenings when you can join the lantern procession and take a stroll through the stunningly lit Biomes after dark.  Have a go at the sport of curling, a sort of bowls on ice!

Take in a tour or just enjoy a glass of wine at Camel Valley Vineyard, overlooking the beautiful valley.

See Port Isaac, the setting for Doc Martin's TV Series, or maybe bustling Padstow the home of Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant, the May Day celebrations and Prideaux Place.

Tamar Lakes near Bude provides a range of water sports including sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing (with equipment hire), coarse fishing and a nature reserve. Colliford is Cornwall's largest inland water, with a vast surface area of 900 acres, located just off the A30.  Ample car parking, picnic areas and lakeside walks.

Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway is a standard gauge railway that operates mainly steam locomotives. Enjoy a 13 mile round trip on this steeply graded line through the beautiful countryside. Look out for the 'Santa' journeys in December!

Built in 1779 Bodmin Jail is a landmark historical site in the heart of Cornwall. Showcasing the rich and darkly fascinating legacy of Georgian and Victorian crime and punishment, the jail is an immersive, world class experience for all the family. Award-winning heritage tours, paranormal experiences and self-guided entry provide a unique pathway to the past.
